To: UN, UNICEF, Amnesty International, ILO, ENNHRI and who cares about human
rights defenders in Iran
Subject: Thank you for expressing solidarity, however, it is time for urgent action
for Iran
In the aftermath of the tragic death of Mahsa Amini and since the beginning
of the protests in Iran, footage of police violence and regime brutalities has
been widely spread on social media. Iranian unarmed kids, teenagers, women, and
men chanting “woman life freedom” on the streets, have been targets of the
reckless use of firearms and military equipment in their large or small towns.
Thousands of protesters including women and children have been arrested, and
hundreds were subject to forced disappearances. This has left families
devastated, searching for their loved ones to see whether they are alive or
dead.
The authority’s reckless oppression is not limited to people protesting and
crying out their basic human rights on the streets; students at schools and
universities, journalists revealing the truth of the regime’s tyranny,
political and union activists detained in prisons, medics who merely cared for
injured protestors, all have been targeted not only by official military arms
of the government, but also by extrajudicial forces that unlawfully and
brutally attack, harass, and abduct people on the streets.
Following people’s peaceful protests and demonstrations, the government has
since responded with more violence and threatened protestors. The tragic event
of setting Evin detainment centre ablaze in Tehran is not the only example. On
Sunday 13th of November judiciary’s news website cited the trial of at least 11
civilians charged with offences such as “Moharebeh”, and can carry capital
punishment: Mohammad Gobadlou, Mohammad Broghani, Saman Seydi, Mohsen
Rezazadeh-Gharaghlou, Saeid Shirazi, Abolfazl Mehri-Hossein-Hajilou are some of
the protesters at risk of execution.
Charges have been filed against more than 15000 individuals in provinces
across Iran in connection to the protests.
Given all these tragic stories of fighters for human rights in Iran, we, as
self-exiled Iranians living outside Iran, hereby express our deepest concern
about the incidents in Iran over the past six weeks. Although we appreciate the
international expression of solidarity we received from different
organizations, and in particular public figures who supported the uprising in
Iran to raise awareness about what is happening there, however condemning the
violence verbally is not enough. It is time to act more decisive and take rigid
action. Time to be brave like Iranian women and men.
We urge the international institutional bodies, including the UN, UNICEF,
Amnesty International, ENNHRI, and others to take urgent action to impede the
Iranian regime from using more violence and to prevent further loss of life.
Our demands are not limited but can be followed in five main categories:
1. Prisoners at Evin prison, Fashafooyeh, Gohardasht and other prisons
throughout the country are in urgent need of international scrutiny and
protection. We demand immediate interference from the UN and Amnesty
International to elucidate the reality of the things happening inside the
detainment centres.
2. From the first days of the uprising, factory workers, especially workers
in the petrochemical sector, went on strike, both in solidarity with the
protestors and as another instance to voice their demands. Since then, multiple
union leaders have been arrested and made into hostages, to force workers back
to work. We demand international worker’s unions and ILO show their support to
their Iranian brothers and sisters “in practice” not verbally.
3. University students have been subjected to cruel treatment, not only by
security forces but also by the university itself. University grounds have been
opened up to security forces with the purpose of attacking students, hundreds
of students have been dismissed extrajudicially, and even nonlocal students
have been denied access to dormitories and university restaurants. We request
UN and NHRI take industrial action in support of university students.
4. Multiple reports suggest school headmasters have handed over their
students to security forces. One famous instance was the case of a school in
the city of Ardabil, which resulted in the death of two minor students, and the
suicide of one of the girls’ brothers. We demand international bodies, among
them UNICEF, take urgent action against the Iranian regime to protect our
children from police violence in Iran. Since the beginning of the uprisings at
least 47 children were killed in Iran which requires immediate action.
5. Iranian government has severely restricted Internet access in general
and vast internet filtering has limited Iranian people’s access to social media
platforms such as Instagram. We request that International human rights bodies
intervene, take action and oblige the Iranian regime to respect the basic
rights of their civilians such as access to the internet.
Sincerely
